Government Official Says MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every areas of government activities, from vehicle use to communication habits.
