Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
